Particle identification at LHC: Alice and LHCb
The Alice and LHCb collaborations equipped their detectors with many technologies to identify particles in a large momentum range, both in the barrel and the forward regions. The methods used are described and some details on the hardware implementation are given. A few physics results illustrate the performances obtained by the two detectors.
متن کاملGeneral-purpose event generators for LHC physics
We review the physics basis, main features and use of general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators for the simulation of proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Topics included are: the generation of hardscattering matrix elements for processes of interest, at both leading and nextto-leading QCD perturbative order; their matching to approximate treatments of higher orders based o...
متن کاملAbsolute luminosity measurements with the LHCb detector at the LHC
Absolute luminosity measurements are of general interest for colliding-beam experiments at storage rings. These measurements are necessary to determine the absolute cross-sections of reaction processes and are valuable to quantify the performance of the accelerator. Using data taken in 2010, LHCb has applied two methods to determine the absolute scale of its luminosity measurements for proton-p...
متن کاملPerformance of the LHCb RICH detector at the LHC
The LHCb experiment has been taking data at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN since the end of 2009. One of its key detector components is the Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) system. This provides charged particle identification over a wide momentum range, from 2-100 GeV/c. The operation and control, software, and online monitoring of the RICH system are described. The particle identificati...
متن کاملTwo Photon Background for Higgs Boson Searches at the Lhc
The search for an intermediate mass Higgs boson at the LHC needs the quantitative understanding of the two-photon background. A calculation of two-photon production in hadronic collisions at full next-to-leading order is described. It includes photons originating from the hadronization of QCD partons which play an important role at the LHC. A prediction for the invariant mass distribution for p...
